Our Story
The first Phibsboro Community Sponsorship Group was established in August 2023. Since then we have established two groups of neighbours living in Phibsboro, Dublin 7 that have come together to raise funds to support two people from Afghanistan, facing persecution and threats to their life, to be resettled in Ireland under the Irish Refugee Protection Programme.
Our Mission
Through our Primary Sponsors, we became aware of who’s lives were at risk if they remain in Afghanistan.
Supporting these two individuals to reach safety was something we wished to do. Following support from the Irish Refugee Council and the Open Community we formally organised ourselves into Community Sponsorship Groups.
Our steering committees worked to facilitate the safe resettlement to Ireland of for our two Afghan friends. All group members have had engagement with the refugee context in one way or another, through community, professional and academic work and through personal contacts.

Project Update
We are delighted to share that the two individuals we supported have now been safely resettled in Ireland and are settling well into their new lives.
Since their arrival, they have begun to adapt to life in their local community — attending English language classes, getting to know their neighbours, finding employment and learning about Irish culture and daily life. They are also engaging with local services and supports, with the guidance of our Community Sponsorship Groups and Primary Sponsors.
Our group continues to provide practical and emotional support as they navigate housing, education, and employment opportunities. Seeing our Afghan friends begin to rebuild their lives in safety and stability has been a powerful reminder of what a community, and the community sponsorship programme can achieve.
